Phuket will become AirAsia’s second hub in Thailand. This is part of a plan to open new routes connecting the island with other cities in Asia. The airline also plans to open bases in Medan, Indonesia, Pengang, Malaysia, and Bandung in West Java.

Phuket is already one of the top airports for AirAsia, with high traffic volume. The new base, which should be in operation by the second half of 2009, should appeal to an even wider base of leisure travelers. Initial routes will include direct flights from Hong Kong and cities in China.

Any expansion of air travel options is welcome news to Phuket. This island paradise has been a favorite holiday destination for years. The current economic downturn has been hurting the tourist industry across Asia. Restaurants, resorts, and 5 star hotels Phuket are all starting to feel the pinch. More budget-friendly flights means more tourists — and tourists with more cash in their pockets.

AirAsia is the largest low-cost carrier in Southeast Asia. It’s current Thailand hub is in Bangkok.
