Competition in a metropolitan area can be difficult, and it is sometimes in everyone’s best interest to work together to get the public interested in a particular part of society. On the 6th of March was a great example of one such event in which Miller and Smith as well as Next Day Blinds design team and a number of others teamed together in a great conference of ideas on home design in which they showed off many of their best products to the public as an innovative way to entice the public as well as educate them about decorating a house to fit their personal needs. This was one way in which everyone could get a good chance to stay in business, something that has been a problem for this industry since the economic crash.

While there are many other ways that can really make it easier to compete, this was a smart one. It could have been done a lot better though if there had been announcements that went up on the facebook page of every presenting company as well as every presenter putting it up there as well. The great thing about the internet is that you can put up information about your business on more than just your website , you can add it to every website you have a presence on. Using things like Twitter, Google profiles, Linked in, and Facebook isn’t cheating, it is quickly becoming standard practice and really is just a matter of using the tools you have on you.

There is something different about marketing with social media however. You don’t have to put everything out there like an advertisement, though it doesn’t hurt to put a few out there like that. It can sometimes also be good to make a few more human posts, allowing the writer to shine through the corporation some. There are some great blogs out there for art studios in which they don’t just highlight the shows that are on, but make a point of highlighting the people who work there , working hard to make sure that everyone involved gets paid. Using social media as a company to award your employees may get them to link to you and show you off to more people, or it may just make them proud.

If you’re going to retrofit a wood fireplace with a gas insert, then you have to do your research. Don’t rely on brochures and advice from neighbors. Get ready to go to the stores and really investigate what installing gas inserts is all about. Here are a few things to consider:

You have two basic choices of gas inserts, conventionally vented and direct vented. The conventionally vented insert often gives you less problems with performance. Almost all have a four inch flex vent that extends from the unit to the chimney top. This resizes the chimney — with a gas insert you don’t need all the room anymore, because you’ll have fewer combustion products, as opposed to a regular fire, in which a chimney must cope with smoke and heat and air dilution, and so on.

Direct vented inserts use two or three inch flex vents. One of these vents is for the exhaust, and the other is to bring in combustion air. If you’re in a tightly sealed home, you may want this type, because you’ll be concerned about the available combustible air that the fireplace receives.

Inspect carefully the make and brand, and even the construction, of your insert. Because, contrary to popular opinion, an insert is not always just an insert, and occasionally items are not on the insert you might expect. So be sure to take a close look. Ask about the manufacturer of the insert. Consider the smaller manufacturer as well, because many of them can make quality products at fairly low prices, comparatively.

Try not to buy on the basis of a brochure. As often as possible, you want to take a look at these inserts personally. Some places have burning displays. Think of the advantages of seeing the insert in use before you make your choice! But be sure to ask questions about how the burn display is set up, to be sure that the unit will operate the similarly in your home. If you like the answers, if you like the construction quality of the insert, if the price is reasonable, then you definitely want to buy it.

If you want to dress up the insert with some gold trim or a gold door, etcetera, then be sure to ask if the inserts are shown with accessories or if they’re added costs. Check out the base unit price. Personally, I don’t care for the brass louvres or trim because they can tarnish quickly. I’d prefer the real 24K gold plated doors, which can retain their shine for years, and it’s not as costly as you might imagine.

There’s more to say, I’m sure, but here’s hoping these few points have given you something to consider when retrofitting your fireplace!

There’s nothing that smells like Summer like an outdoor grill. Cooking outdoor isn’t just an activity for the warmer weather, however, because a grill can be used all year round. There are so many splendid things that can be done to all kinds of seasonable meals, and for fresh fruits and vegetables as well. Once you start to experiment with your outdoor kitchen, you’ll learn how fast things will start coming to you. Things you’ve never dreamed of grilling, like desserts, and different kinds of seasonings, like coffee, it’s all possible, and there are many others who have tried these tastes with great success. There’s always time to learn new ways of cooking, and with our bbq grills on sale, the time is definitely now.

Your friends and neighbors will love the smell of outdoor cooking as much as you do, and they’ll probably appreciate your cooking mistakes as much as your successes. It’s all part of the process, and great things can be learned when you decide to try something new. It’s probably not a far stretch to add garlic to your meal. It’s one of the main food groups for some people, and it adds zest and enormous flavor to all kinds of dishes. Whether you’re flavoring meats or even vegetables, garlic can be a wonderful way to make the flavors come out. And it certainly gets the neighbors wondering.

Roasted garlic all on its own can also be a fantastic side dish. Cooking it separately is also a good way to make the strong flavors available to everyone who wants the taste. Roasting garlic on the bbq is very similar to roasting it in a conventional indoor oven, but the taste is exquisite, and certainly enhanced by the grill. To grill, you would open the head of garlic and butter the ends, then wrap in aluminum foil and grill for 30-40 minutes, or until the garlic is softened. The cloves should pop out of the skin fairly easily, and many people like to eat the cloves whole, or you could add the wonderful roasted garlic to season foods to your liking. Adding roasted garlic to French bread is a wonderful twist on an old standard, and is sure to stand out!

As the Southwestern decorating style draws from the elements of the earth, the Tuscan style of decorating draws from all of nature’s elements. Homes decorated in this style are warm and comfortable. Wrought iron furniture and fixtures are mixed in with the crumbling walls made of stone and stucco. The marble or stone floors set off the furniture made of sturdy hardwood, with the back drop of simple shades and blinds covering the windows.

This style brings in the feelings of the Italian sun bleached country sides and the old farmhouses filled with guests around the dinner table. In this hectic world it is no wonder that this peaceful style of decorating has become very popular outside the Italian town of Tuscany. Although the lines are clean, as in the bamboo shades or Venetian blinds found at Next Day Blinds, there is no pretense involved with this style.

For the clean, contemporary lines are mixed with well worn and well loved pieces of furniture, creating a very homey and comfortable feel. From the times of Ancient Rome, people moved from the city life to the hills to escape the hectic hustle and bustle of city life, and to get back to nature. Modern people of the world are doing the same thing today.

And the Tuscan style brings that nature into the home, either by bringing the elements themselves in, or designing their windows in the possible way, through the treatments found at Next Day Blinds, to allow in the light, and the views of the outside world. Homes decorated in this style have an enduring and a solid quality, with stone, terra cotta tile, wood and ceramics. The outdoor areas such as the patios and the porticos are built of sandstone and surrounded by gardens, further incorporating nature with everyday life and the design of one’s home.

Next Day Blinds Columbia Maryland, offers tips and tools on getting just the right atmosphere for your sacred home space.

Kitchen and Informal Dining Rooms

Natural sunlight can brighten up any kitchen to create an inviting space for food and cooking. Informal dining areas located near the kitchen can also benefit from being well-lit, so that at breakfast and lunch there isn’t any need to turn on the artificial lights. Plantation shutters have a rich, historical look that matches well with the colonial house design in either space. Choosing a wood stain with a deep or bright color can further liven your space.

Formal Dining and Sitting Rooms

There are some places in your home that you want to stand out from the rest. One of the most elegant of window treatments are cornices. Next Day Blinds has a variety of hand-crafted cornices available in several types of wood and stain options. Cornices look lovely on their own or as a complement to wooden furniture.

Bedrooms, Living Spaces, Libraries and Game Rooms

For a casually sophisticated appearance, honeycomb shades are great for maintaining privacy while keeping your rooms softly lit. If a room is being decorated with a more modern look, aluminum blinds brighten up a simple, sterile look.

Another way to completely transform your rooms and create mood with beautiful window coverings is to consider putting in natural Roman shades. Made from natural materials such as bamboo, grasses, reeds, and yarns, these shades transform any room into an exotic oasis.

Most homes in Columbia are newer, as the city was created in 1967 as a planned community. When it comes to remodeling the windows in a newer home, it’s important to take a look at what each room is now and envision what the room will look like in the future. Newer homes usually will not require any structural changes to upgrade or remodel the windows, but it is the perfect time to decide if a change to the foundation would make the room more spacious or improve the aesthetics.
