One of Bangkok’s more intriquing attractions is located just outside the city. “Mung Boran” or the “Ancient City” spreads across 320 acres between Bangkok and Pattaya. Still unknown to many tourists, the Ancient City is worth spending the better part of a day at the park.

The Ancient City is laid out to minic the shape of Thailand and recognizes the artistic and cultural impact of Thai architecture over time. It includes over one hundred reproductions of important buildings from all over the country. Some of the structures are scale models of buildings while others were moved to the site instead of being demolished. Some of the monuments reproduce buidings that no longer exist.

In addition to royal and religious sites, the Ancient City recreates traditional Thai homes from previous era. There is a throne hall that was destroyed 200 years ago and features reproductions of historic wall paintings. There is also a central house that is typical of Thai platform constructon. There is also a sample f a floating village that features several restaurants.

There are several temples in the park. A hill temple from North Thailand was transported and reconstructed on the site. It offers a different style of carving and decoration than is present in contemporary Thai temples. The park is in the process of building a large temple that will house around one thousand Buddha images when complete.

Visitors to this unique park will find plenty of accomodations in the nearby city. There are some excellent five star hotels in Bangkok as well as comfortable guest houses and other hotels.
