Near Hong Kong

Well you have been staying in a fabulous hotel in Hong Kong like the ones here and maybe you have seen some things already like Victoria Peak or a harbor cruise but there is more. You can always pull away from the city and see some of the other areas that surround it. There is always the Big Buddha on Landau Island and a day trip to macau. Macau is on the west side of the Pearl River Delta and it currently has a rather strong textile industry. They also have manufacture electronics and toys. Then there is the thriving tourist industry contributing to the economy.

This is the town of the first and last European settlement in China. It started with the Portuguese traders who came to the area. While you are learning about Macau you can have some fun in the casino’s in town. The Wynn Macau, Casino Lisboa and the Grand Lisboa are all near each other and light up well at night. There are some interesting historical markers like A-Ma Temple which was built in 1448 as a dedication to Matsu an Asian goddess. As you walk around yo may notice that the streets signs have both Chinese lettering, Portuguese and English on them.

One of the most visited attractions is the Ruins of St. Paul’s which was originally the Cathedral of St. Paul. It was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century. Now they are a ruins that are left behind after a bad fire took most of the building in 1835. There was a typhoon that hit the area and some how the building caught fire. You can see the Fortaleza do Monte looking over the ruin. It was built by Japanese Christians who were not welcome in their own land. The ruin is quite a mix of cultures and one of the most famous landmarks of Macau.
