Gabriel Iglesias in San Antonio

Stand up comedy fans have lots of reasons to celebrate when they’re in San Antonio.  And some of the reasons are larger than others, and some are explosively large, and look like there has been a lifetime of deep observation and lots of cake going into the material.  There’s always been a pretty good scene here, with some of the most exciting music in the region.  San Antonio is a blend of cultures, like anywhere else in the country, and the local scene is on the verge of becoming global.  Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the stand-up is becoming more global.  The music has always been very comfortable on many different sides of many different borders, so it’s always nice to see it happen with spoken word entertainment.

This year will be an excellent time to book with an attitude built for luxury. San Antonio hotels offer a very spectacular kind of hospitality that speaks of an international sensibility, but simply can’t be found anywhere else on the planet.  This year should be one of the most exciting times for comedy fans, and will see a lot more of the already easy-to-see Gabriel Iglecias.  This guy is catching a rising star, and has been working his own self off for a few years now, perfecting his voices and his timing, and the material is just excellent.

He’s fluffy, of course, and also extremely charming.  He was born in San Diego, and grew up between there and Los Angeles, where his sharp comic mind was formed by friends and family.  His last name is actually spelled with a c for Iglecias, rather that Iglesias, as part of his mother’s punishment for his father not being at his birth on time.  She modified his name, and he discovered early on that modifying his identity could be very useful, if done with careful attention.  And a whole lot of outrageous intentions.  He has a quality that is very interesting to watch, and one does get the feeling that he’s going to be extremely funny no matter how much he weighs, because there’s something beneath the skin here that is entirely charming.
