Becoming a Foodie in Bombay
Somewhere along the way, I found myself having an extreme amount of fun in Bombay. Needless to say, I’ve been lax in my travel blog. Plus, my laptop was adopted by my fellow travellers, so it seems when I do have time to blog, my laptop is no where around! I think I need to gain control of my laptop again.
So, most days now are foodie days. I feel like I’m becoming more adjusted to this place and well as the pace here. My days are now filled with eating at Bombay restaurants, which can involve long tuk-tuk rides, which leads to one hour of cardio at the gym in my hotel. Now that I’ve gotten rid of my standard manic attitude where I have to always be doing something, I’ve grown to love just sitting, anywhere. Like at a cafe’ or just stand still on a busy street and people watch or listen to music while sitting on the balcony of my hotel room.
I took a stroll to Lokanwala Market, which is only five minutes away by rickshaw for my hotel. It’s a market full of various stalls, each selling a multifarious mix of Indian goods. My goal was to track down an affordable outfit for Holi, a Hindu festival. I didn’t have any idea of what I was getting myself into, but I was told to wear something white, which I don’t like and white doesn’t look good on me. I bought a white skirt and was hoping I had packed a white T-shirt.
Back at my hotel, I was invited to go next door or to a rooftop Holi party. First, I went next door where I was asked to remove my shoes and then two women dressed in Saris put a red dot on my forehead. Then I climbed the stairs to the roof and found these white satin cushions blanketing the rooftop. They were serving traditional Indian food and a drink called Phang. Phang was a very sweet milky cocktail known to give one hallucinations. I sat beneath the Bombay sky, drinking, listening to a small acoustic band, enjoying the food and everything was peaceful.
