How to Choose an Addiction Treatment Center

Drug and alcohol addiction is a disease that affects thousands of people in the U.S. each year.  The federal and state governments have spent over $36 billion so far this year on War on Drugs.  Choosing to seek help for an addiction is the best decision that can be made for you and your family.  The road to recovery is not easy but by taking the first step and choosing an addiction treatment center that will be a good fit for you or your loved one will make all the difference.

One of the first things to consider when choosing an appropriate facility is the age and stage of the addict.  Many facilities are geared toward a specific age group or level of addiction, as well as dual diagnosis treatment. You or your loved one will fit in better and be able to get more out of a program that is geared more specifically toward them.

The length of stay is also greatly affected by the age and level of addiction.  Although, depending on the circumstances, the length of stay is dictated by a court order, there are many time frames to choose from.  Some programs are 30 days while others can last a year or more.  This decision will be largely based on the individual receiving treatment; however, especially in more extreme cases, the longer the better.  Addicts are more likely to have a relapse with a shorter program, particularly if they are not ready for treatment.

Location is another important factor to consider when choosing a rehab facility.  There are drug rehabs all over the country, so deciding whether or not to remain close or travel across the country is an important decision.  Often age and level of addiction are considered.  If the level of addiction is very high, it might be better if they were farther removed from their current situation.  On the other hand if they are particularly young, it might be better to have them a little closer.  The individual receiving addiction treatment should also be considered when choosing the location. It should be a place where they will feel comfortable and will be able to focus on getting better.

The last, but certainly not least, thing to consider is the curriculum. Many treatment centers use some form of the 12 step program.  There are also facilities that offer students the ability to finish high school, as well as learn valuable survival skills.  Special programs are also available that include caring for animals, such as horses, camping, karate, weight-lifting, acting classes, and sports—all  of which help to counteract the stress and rigidity of the treatment program.

Choosing an addiction treatment center is a big decision and should not be taken lightly; however with the right information you can make an informed decision and begin the road to recovery for yourself or someone you love.
