The Fateh Sagar Lake of Udaipur

Surprisingly enough, there are many lakes throughout the city of Udaipur. What may not be so surprising is that they were all built, man-made.  Many of them are located conveniently close to the Udaipur Palace hotel and resorts, and can the sting out of the hot summer temperatures.  One such lake was built in 1678, Fateh Sagar.  This was the second man-made lake in the city.  This lake was designed to help with the overflow of water that occurs during the monsoon season in India, as well as providing the perfect day trip out of the city of Udaipur.  This lake is the perfect place to take the entire family.

There are boat rides that take one to any of the three islands situated in the lake.  The largest of the islands is Nehru Park and contains a beautiful garden perfect for picnics as well as a few small restaurants.  There is even a zoo designed especially for children.  This island is a favorite among tourists as well as locals wanting to get out of town from the hustle and bustle of Udaipur.  The second island is also a park, constructed by the Rajasthan Government, designed with many fountains and gardens.

On the third island is the Udaipur Solar Observatory, which is the best of the observatories throughout Asia.  Many come to the lake in search of serenity and relaxation gained through the wandering of the gardens or the waters of the lake.  Pedal boats are rented daily, as well as power boats.  There is a dam on one side of the lake, however the rest is surrounded by mountains which add to the beauty of the landscape and provide those so inclined with the opportunity for hiking along the paths.  Many choose to drive around the lake, on the winding roads, Moti Magri, Rani, and along Fateh Sagar Drive.  The views of the islands, the Aravalli Hills, and the lake along this route are stunning, and many tourists find this to be one of the best ways to take in the tranquility and the beauty of this lake.
